On Friday March 20, 2015, Total Family Care Coalition (TFCC) held our 2015 Youth Empowerment Conference, which was a huge success! Our Executive Director, Gail Avent co-emceed the event with Marcus Clark, Youth Development Specialist. Capital City Youth MOVE NEW chair, DeJa Harrison was introduced along with co-chairAntonio Robinson. Two youth speakers, Tiara Small, a teenager of systems such as the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS) and the Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) and Charles Lane, an aspiring gospel rapper and public speaker delivered a heartwarming and powerful speak to youth about “meeting the criteria” for succeeding in life. Miquel Powell, entrepreneur and author, spoke about his experiences growing up as an at-risk youth; Jamie Timmons, military veteran, publicist, author and a survivor of childhood sexual abuse empowered everyone to speak up, when you are hurting. The conference was attended by more than 50 youth and adults in attendance. A special thanks to our guest speaker, Ty Hodges, a native Washingtonian who starred Disney’s Even Stevens television series and countless movies facilitated the day’s final workshop on creative expression. All workshops received positive reviews.
